Week 5 recap: A bad pun, the Hyphens are stopped and checking on preseason predictions

October 12th, 2009 at Mon, 12th, 2009 at 1:16 pm by Adam McFadden

After a 41-0 win, there are a lot of good things to mention. Here are a few that stick out to me after the Seahawks’ shellacking of Jacksonville Sunday:
1. T.J. Houshmandzadeh finally gets those green gloves in the end zone. The Seahawks’ biggest free agent add had 22 receptions, 248 yards and no touchdowns through four weeks this year. Not bad numbers (especially when you consider the double teams he draws open things up for other guys), but not what fans, and Houshmandzadeh, were expecting. He atoned this week, catching five balls for 77 yards and two TDs.
2. Matt Hasselbeck is… beck. Forgive the poor pun. While Seneca Wallace always fills in well, but the team just plays differently when Hasselbeck is reasonably healthy and under center. The QB scored four times, his first four-TD game since Dec. 9, 2007.
3. The Hyphens have been stopped. The Jags’ dynamic running back Maurice Jones-Drew managed just 34 yards on the ground and the team totaled 38. It was the first time a defense has held Jacksonville to less than 90 rushing yards this year.
Meanwhile surprising wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (278 yards, 3 TDs) didn’t even play. The team benched him for a rules violation.
4. Aaron Curry continues to look like a future Pro Bowler, and that future may be very soon. Curry tallied nine tackles, one forced fumble and one pass deflection. He was everywhere.

One thing I didn’t like:
The run game had another ho-hum day while Justin Forsett averaged 7.2 yards per carry… on six carries. That’s 16 carries on the year, at 6.2 yards per pop. It would’ve been nice to get Forsett more touches in the blowout to see how he does in non-third down situations where defenses are looking to stop the run.

Prediction accountability:
Week 5 predicted result: win
Week 5 actual result: win
Season-to-date predicted record: 3-2
Season-to-date actual record: 2-3
