John Morgan of Field Gulls takes on the case for C.J. Spiller.
Spiller a running back out of Clemson is the top running back prospect in the NFL draft and should (*should*) be available when the Seahawks make their first selection.
Many think Spiller is too small to be a “feature back” in the NFL and Morgan dispels that thought:
C.J. Spiller stands head and shoulders above every other back in his class. He has great quickness to the hole, and so has better holes to hit. He has elite speed exiting the hole, and so maximizes the holes he gets. He’s a special receiver and returner and the combined value of those skills can be as a much or more than that of his rushing.
I mostly agree with everything Morgan is saying, but I would like to add one more thought.
Much is made of Spiller’s size (5-foot-11, 195 pounds), but the way he was a gamebreaker at Clemson in both the running and passing game reminded me of another smallish rusher/receiver who did great things in college: Reggie Bush.
And who was Bush’s coach in college? Pete Carroll. Obviously, there are big differences between the college and NFL games, but I think its safe to say Carroll would know how to use a multi-dimensional talent like Spiller.
