Seahawks Addicts is a great place to find Seahawks news and opinions. This article in particular struck me as interesting. William P. Tomisser goes over some of the team’s strengths and weaknesses for 2009 and he’s very excited about the group of receivers…
… Hasselbeck probably has the best receivers this season that he’s ever had to throw to. Houshmandzadeh is probably the best he’s ever had as a primary target and Branch and Burleson should be able to take the pressure off so opposing teams can’t afford to double anyone. Butler should be making waves before the season is over giving the Seahawks the best 4 wideouts Hasselbeck has yet been teamed with. John Carlson looks ready to set all of the tight end records before he’s through. In fact, I think he almost owns all of them now. This could be the best group of receivers in Seahawk history…
There’s a whole lot of bests in there, but are they warranted (the best in Seahawk history specifically)?
Seattle has T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Deion Branch and Nate Burleson in the top three spots right now.
This group will be hard pressed to beat out the production Darrell Jackson and Koren Robinson put up early this decade. In 2002 Robinson caught 1,240 yards, Jackson 877 and Bobby Engram added 619. That’s 2,736 yards. The same trio totaled 2,670 yards in 2003.
Other productive groups include Joey Galloway, Brian Blades and Carlester Crumper totaling 2,294 yards in 1995. Galloway, Mike Pritchard and James McKnight caught 2,529 yards in 1997.
So what if we assume the best case scenario and take the career-best numbers from the team’s top-three receivers.
For Branch that would be 2005, when he totaled 998 yards. Burleson’s best year was 2004 when he caught 1,006 yards. Houshmandzadeh has three 900-plus yard seasons to his credit, with his best yardage total coming in 2007 (1,143). Add those together and we get 3,147 yards.
The problem with expecting similar numbers from the group is that they all played for different teams in their best seasons. Branch and Burleson each led their team in receiving yards by at least 200 and Houshmandzadeh was second on his team to Chad Johnson.
There are certainly other ways to define “best” but production seems to be the most reasonable to me. I have a hard time believing 2009’s group will be the best group of receivers in Seahawk history, but stranger things have happened.
Any way it works out, wide receiver in 2009 should be much more of a bright spot than wide receiver in 2008 was.
