Mike Sando (ESPN NFC West blogger) passed along some interesting insights from Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell:
* Jordan Babineaux will challenge Brian Russell for the starting job at free safety. Babineaux is focusing on one position — safety, not corner — and the team hopes that helps him. Ruskell also pointed to an improved maturity level with Babineaux. They would like to get more range at the safety position.
* Left guard Mike Wahle has struggled to recover from shoulder surgery. Rookie second-round choice Max Unger therefore has a good opportunity to earn a starting job. They will work Unger at multiple spots on the interior of the line, including center, but Wahle’s situation could open the door for a starting job at guard.
Seattle signed Unger to a four-year deal recently, leaving Aaron Curry as the team’s only unsigned draft pick.
While it’s good the team has Unger for depth, the offensive line is still worse if Wahle doesn’t start.
Babineaux signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent after the 2004 NFL draft out of Southern Arkansas. Since then he has played in at least 14 games every year since his rookie season.
He started eight games in 2006, recording 55 tackles. He has six career interceptions.
